Canadian authorities say there is no credible threat of a terrorist attack on the Montreal transit system although they admit they've been aware of a Spanish investigation into the possibility for quite some time. While urging riders to be vigilant, the RCMP said Wednesday there is no reason to fear after a Spanish newspaper reported that information about the Montreal system was found on the computer of a Moroccan questioned after last year's train bombings in Madrid. An RCMP spokesman said Canadian investigators have known of the discovery of a Montreal subway system map for six months. The Spanish newspaper also reported that the computer contained information about passenger capacity and the operation of subway doors. Montreal subway riders were not surprised by the report and several were even defiant. In Ottawa, Transport Minister Jean Lapierre also said there is no immediate threat. But he added he's not surprised that Canada may have been targeted by foreign terrorists. The federal minister made his comments after announcing $110 million in spending to improve transit security in Canada's six largest cities.
