Day-care centers would open one hour less per day, it is part of a work-to-rule campaign in an ongoing labour dispute between the government and the employees union. Day-care workers have been without a contract for about 2 years, and although they have come close to settling, pay equity is still a sticking point. Jeff Begley, union negotiator says day-care workers are fed up and they are ready to take job action to prove it. «There are no other choices left. We have done everything humanly possible to come to an agreement,» he said Wednesday. In order to avoid an outright strike, the union is encouraging day-care workers to vote in favour of a work-to-rule campaign. "The first 2 weeks, it would be: day-care centers would open an hour later. And starting from the third week, it would be two hours later," he said. Although many parents will be inconvenienced by the move, Begley believes they support the employees. «They have been really supportive to our members so it is a way to minimize the pressure on them.» The union says the work-to-rule campaign will begin on Monday, March 13.
