Montreal — Bloc Québécois Leader Gilles Duceppe is denouncing Stephen Harper for reopening the debate on same-sex marriage. Mr. Duceppe says he can't understand why Mr. Harper would re-launch a debate that is already settled. During a news conference in the heart of Montreal's gay village, Mr. Duceppe said he will fight any attempt to ban homosexual marriage. If he wins Jan. 23 election, Mr. Harper says he would put a motion before the Commons to restore the traditional definition of marriage — as between a man and a woman. He says it's wrong to constantly revisit issues that cause such turmoil among citizens but have been decided by Parliament and the courts. Mr. Duceppe noted the arrival in the campaign of former astronaut Marc Garneau, who will run as a Liberal near Montreal, and while Mr. Duceppe says he respects Mr. Garneau's accomplishments, he still intends to defeat him.
