A Canadian Press news brief in papers - saying that Health Canada has approved pharmaceutical firm Pfizer Inc.'s cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor for use in treating diabetics at risk of stroke or heart attack - may have left the impression that this was the first approval of Lipitor's use in Canada. Practically, the approval announced yesterday applies specifically to its use in the reduction of the risk of heart attack and stroke in adults with Type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypertension who do not have clinically evident coronary heart disease but with other risk factors. Lipitor has been available for use in Canada since 1997.
